Your Ad Report Says People Clicked. Did Anyone Buy?
If you run ads for your business or nonprofit, you’ve probably looked at a report full of clicks, impressions, and cost-per-click and wondered what any of it means for your bottom line. You’re not alone. On a recent Leader Generation episode, Alia Lamborghini, SVP of Global Revenue at Yahoo DSP, said the advertisers she works with are moving away from those numbers and asking a simpler question. Who actually came through the door?
You don’t need a big budget to start thinking this way. Here’s how to apply it to your own campaigns.
Pick the one result that pays the bills
Before you spend another dollar, write down the single action that matters most. For a real estate agent, it might be a booked consultation. For a nonprofit, it might be a completed donation or a volunteer signup. For a shop it’s a sale. Then make sure you can count it. That might mean a dedicated phone number on your ad, a specific landing page, or simply asking every new customer how they found you.
Check in while the campaign is running
Alia’s point was that waiting until a campaign ends to find out what worked means you’ve already spent the money. Set a date one or two weeks in and look at your numbers then. If one ad or audience is bringing in real inquiries and another isn’t, move the money now.
Use your own customer list
Your past customers, donors and email subscribers are some of the most valuable information you have. Most ad platforms let you upload a list to reach people similar to them. Keep that list clean and current so it’s ready when you need it.
Hand off the busywork, not the judgment
Alia compared AI tools to having someone else do the chopping and cleanup so you can focus on cooking the meal. Let software handle repetitive setup and reporting. Keep a person reviewing what’s running, especially before any budget increase.
Ask your vendors three questions
Before you sign with an agency or ad platform, ask how soon you’ll see results you can act on, whether their tools work with the other systems you use, and who you’ll talk to when something goes wrong. Pay attention to how fast they answer that last one.
